Umno's Husni not nominated to seek sixth term

GE14 | Tambun Umno division did not nominate incumbent Tambun MP Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah to defend his seat, despite his stated willingness to do so.
According to sources, the Tambun Umno division nominated its deputy chief Aminuddin Md Hanafiah to replace Husni, who has been Tambun MP for five terms since 1995.
Sources said the Aminuddin's nomination has been forwarded to Perak BN head Zambry Abdul Kadir.
"We do not know if Zambry will submit Aminuddin's name to the BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak and whether the latter will choose Aminuddin as the Tambun candidate.
"But Tambun Umno division supports Aminuddin and wanted him for the Tambun MP," a source told Malaysiakini.
According to the source, the Tambun Umno division's relationship with Husni, their former leader, has been strained since his resignation from all party positions and as a cabinet minister in 2016.
"The division members and Husni are now 'tak ngam(incompatible)," he said.
Husni steadily climbed the political ladder until he was made second finance minister in 2009. At the time, his portfolio included being a government spokesperson on 1MDB-related matter.
His involvement in the 1MDB affair would eventually prove to be his undoing. He resigned in June 2016.
A mini-cabinet reshuffle followed with the episode resulting in speculation of a rift between Husni and Najib, the prime minister.
Following this, he raised eyebrows by questioning the need for 1MDB, in Parliament and warning BN that it may haunt BN in the future. At the time, the 1MDB affair attracted global attention over money laundering allegations.
However, a year later, Husni appeared to have changed his tune, praising Najib and claiming that the now caretaker prime minister would leave behind a "zero corruption legacy".
By February this year, Husni said he was willing to defend his Tambun seat, if ordered to do so by Najib.
Although Husni's relationship with Najib seemed to be on the mend, sources said his relations with the division was not.
A source said Husni and Aminuddin once enjoyed a "teacher-student" relationship. That, too, has since disappeared.
Aminuddin (picture) is the incumbent Hulu Kinta assemblyperson. Sources said he has been taking over Husni's duties at the Tambun Umno division since 2016 and has actively been seen around the constituency.
However, should Najib instruct Husni to defend his seat, the Tambun division members would likely comply.
"We will be forced to do so, even if some of us are not happy. We need to work hard to make sure BN wins," he said.
Another source said he was not optimistic about Aminuddin's chances because Husni and Najib have a longstanding relationship.
"They are 'old friend' while Aminuddin is still new," he said.
When contacted, Husni refused to comment on allegations that the Tambun Umno division did not nominate him as a candidate.
"Nevermind. We will discuss this later," he told Malaysiakini.
Husni was one of the few BN candidates who saw their majority increase during the 2013 general election. - Mkini
