Tanjung Manis MP Norah not contesting GE14

The incumbent member of parliament for Tanjung Manis Norah Abdul Rahman (above) announced today that she will not be defending her seat in the coming 14th general election.
She stated her intention not to contest in a Facebook posting and cited her health condition as the reason.
She said she had already met Sarawak caretaker chief minister Abang Johari Abang Openg (above) and informed him of her decision not to contest the seat.
She said: “I have told Abang Johari and deputy (caretaker) chief minister Awang Tengah to exclude me as a candidate in this GE14 due to health reasons.”
The two-term MP thanked those who had been supporting her and apologised for any shortcomings during her tenure as the Tanjong Manis parliamentarian.
Norah, the daughter of former Sarawak head of state Abdul Rahman Yakub (below), also urged her former constituents to accept and support the new candidate to be decided by BN soon.
“I pray that Sarawak BN will again win big and win with style. Let us give full support to our chief minister and prime minister,” she said.
Norah also said the BN support base in Tanjong Manis must always remain strong in all the villages, longhouses and settlements.
“The people of Tanjong Manis are always loyal to PBB and BN will go to the ground ensuring our big win there.
“To the people of Tanjong Manis, make me proud and readily accept the new candidate,” she added in her posting.
Major port city
Norah was elected unopposed in the 2008 general election. In 2013, she won the seat by a 10,964 vote-majority against a PAS candidate.
With her not defending the seat, PBB will now have to find four new faces as candidates in GE14.
The other two seats that will have new faces are Mukah, Betong and Puncak Borneo.
The constituency comprises the polling districts of Selalang, Belawai, Rajang, Sari, Seberang, Nanga lepa, Paloh, Mupong, Semop, Tekajong, Bruit, Bunut and Bitanggor.
Tanjung Manis is on its way to becoming a major industrial port city and a key element in the country’s global halal hub strategy.
The natural deep-water harbour at Tanjung Manis, strategically located at the mouth of the Rajang River, is the main port serving this part of the region.
It is a valuable gateway for exporters in the timber, palm oil and food processing industries and also provides an ideal location for businesses based on fishing and marine engineering. - Mkini
