Nufam: Form new airline for stewardesses in shariah-compliant uniforms

PETALING JAYA: The National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) today warned a senator who suggested getting flight stewardesses to wear shariah-compliant uniforms against upsetting the current practice.
“Don’t let us disturb or interfere with what now exists,” Nufam said in a statement.
“If anyone wants to propose (wearing) the tudung, I think it’s better to form a new company that practises the shariah concept.”
It added that the proposal was inappropriate and infringed on the individual rights of employees.
Umno senator Hanafi Mamat yesterday proposed that the government introduce shariah-compliant uniforms for flight stewardesses serving the country’s airlines, in line with Malaysia’s image as a Muslim country.
“When our flight stewardesses dress sexily and disrespectfully, this will give tourists who use the services of our national carriers the wrong impression.
“The time has come for the government to provide new uniform guidelines which will portray Malaysia as a Muslim country with strong eastern values,” he said during the debate on the Supply Bill 2018 in the Dewan Negara.
Nufam said the wish of some female employees to wear the tudung was not something that should be played up.
“Wearing the tudung should fit the place of work,” it added.
Hanafi’s proposal came on the heels of various calls to the aviation industry in Malaysia to change to shariah-compliant practices.
PAS and several Muslim NGOs had earlier urged Malaysia Airlines to stop serving alcohol on its planes.
However, Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said in a reply in the Dewan Rakyat in August that serving alcohol during flights was up to the individual airlines. -FMT
