SO USELESS, HE HAS TO BE REPLACED BY A WOMAN? JAMES MASING’S MOVE TO REPLACE WORST-PERFORMING MP WITH FEMALE CANDIDATE – INSULT OR PROGRESS?

THE second largest party in the Sarawak Barisan Nasional coalition, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, will axe the worst of its underperforming MPs to make way for a woman candidate in the next general election.
There are six PRS MPs, whose seats are in rural Dayak-majority constituencies – Sri Aman (Deputy Home Minister Masir Gujat), Lubok Antu (William Nyallau Badak), Julau (former deputy minister for Information Communication and Culture Joseph Salang Gandum), Kanowit (Aaron Ago Dagang), Selangau ( Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Joseph Entulu Belaun) and Hulu Rajang (Wilson Ugak Kumbong).
PRS president James Masing did not disclose who faces the axe but word on the political grapevine has it that the two-term Lubok Antu MP, Nyallau’s head is on the chopping block.
All Masing would say was that the “election is still a long way off and I am still looking at the performance of my six MPs,” to reporters at Chief Minister Abang Johari’s Raya open house at the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching today.
“I’m seriously looking at a possible woman candidate.”
Masing said it is only fair for the party to field a woman candidate as women account for half the party membership.

“We have to recognise them. If I don’t, I will be in trouble.
“(So) unless the BN gives me a new seat, one of the incumbents will be dropped,” Masing, who is also the second deputy chief minister, said.
Masing described his MPs’ performance as “standard”.
“In general, the majority performed on par. No one was exceptional.”
Masing, who is confident PRS would keep all six seats, said he believed the general election would be in April next year as “BN have quite a few problems to solve first”.
“The first quarter next year is my guess.”
